Dean of Iowa featured as a Tahitian Noni International Distributor
Eldridge,
Iowa - When Nancy Dean tells people she's a distributor for TAHITIAN
NONI® Juice, she knows she'll have some "explaining"
to do.
"I
always wait for the 'What?'" observes the Eldridge entrepreneur,
who first learned of the health benefits of noni (pronounced NOH-nee)
- a Polynesian fruit - when she visited a booth at the Bix 7 race
last summer.
Once
a participant in the annual run, the 60s-something Dean had been
sidelined by a number of health problems, and had recently taken
a bad fall, as well.
As
things just seemed to keep going from bad to worse, Dean did the
only thing she knew to do: she turned to prayer.
She
remembers that shortly after that, she went down to the Bix Fest
to take advantage of a free bone density screening being offered.
"I was (wandering) around after I had the test and came across
this booth," said Dean, who was initially skeptical about
what was being touted as an "exciting new health product."
"It
looked kind of weird to me," she admitted. But the vendor
offered her a video with information about TAHITIAN NONI Juice,
and she thought it was worth a try.
"It
was an answer to prayer. I had almost immediate results - miraculous
results," she said, noting that she had more energy and felt
less stressed. "Right away I could see the potential in the
business."
Interestingly,
the word "noni" means "gift of God" in Tahitian,
she says.
Tahitian
Noni International, Inc., which markets the product, makes no
claims about the juice's therapeutic and/or curative powers. But
because Dean's own experience was so positive, she decided to
join the company's sales force. TAHITIAN NONI® Juice is only
available through independent distributors like Dean.
The
product already has a following on the East and West coasts (there
are even noni cafes springing up), according to Dean. But Midwesterners
aren't all that familiar with it. She hopes to change all that.
"Basically,
we're just trying to educate people," she said.
Noni,
also called Morinda citrifolia, has been widely used by Polynesians
for thousands of years. It grows abundantly, year-round, in the
Pacific islands, and is believed to have been brought there as
"canoe plants" in the outriggers of the first settlers.
Two
scientists, Stephen Story and John Wadsworth, "discovered"
the plant and began studying its beneficial properties. They later
developed a proprietary method of harvesting and processing the
fruit. The company they founded with three other partners has
been among the fastest-growing in history, with distributors in
70 countries and plans for expansion into dozens more.
So
what's this exotic edible got that other fruits don't?
Scientists
have been studying the tropical plant for years, and new research
is being conducted, in particular, on proxeronine, which is found
in noni. Proxeronine is an alkaloid used by the body to strengthen
and revitalize cells.
The
company's promotional material says the product works on a cellular
level and "supports nearly every system in the body."
Research shows that it:
Supports the immune system's natural ability to fight disease
and infection.
Is a superior antioxidant that helps rid the body of harmful
free radicals.
Supports proper digestion and helps the body absorb more
nutrients at the cellular level.
Boosts the metabolic system, resulting in feelings of increased
energy and vitality.
Contains components that are specifically important for
the skin and hair.
Other noticeable benefits may include greater mental clarity,
an increased attention span, and enhanced performance levels,
according to officials.
In
addition to the juice, the company markets the Tahiti Trim®
Plan 40 dieting program designed exclusively for women;
a tea; protein drinks; and other dietary supplements. Also available
are lotions and other external products that tap into noni's beneficial
properties.
Dean
admits that noni juice, by itself, is not exactly tasty. However,
other nutrient-rich juices are added to make the product more
palatable. Noni is also somewhat pricey, although one bottle (retail
price, $45) lasts over a month.
Dean,
who retired a few years ago from AT&T, hopes to use her extra
income from the distributorship to launch her own Christian ministry.
Having
raised her two children - Kelly and Scott - alone (her husband
walked out after Scott was born), she has "a heart for single
women," she says. Dean would like to help them in some way,
perhaps making funds available to them to hire people to do odd
jobs they can't tackle on their own.
"Women
who are single parents get to be pretty good at doing most everything
that they need to do, but every once in awhile there is a need
to get a plumber. I would like to be able to (cover those costs)."
She
also hopes to expand her ministry with Victoria's Christian Living
International, an organization that equips people for discipleship
of others. Dean, who attends Calvary Church of the Quad Cities,
would like to disciple women, she says.
The
64-year-old Lowden, Iowa, native believes that the noni business
will allow her to do more to spread God's word - another answer
to prayer, she emphasizes. Homeless and jobless as a young mother,
Dean is upbeat and looking forward to a bright future these days.
